Keep Your Sales Letters Simple

Topics: sales letters

Simple sales letters are the best when converting readers into customers. Great marketing gurus and prolific copywriters often say that sales letters should be kept simple, short and straight to the point. Starting from the headlines, words that you need to use should be plain and easily understood by majority of your readers. Even if you are selling a product to graduate school students, you do not have to use words that are complicated and have several connotations. Although the length of the letter does not really matter that much, it would still be best to convey all the things that you have to say in a concise and simple way.

The body of simple sales letters is usually not very long and winding. You should keep sentences clear and straightforward. There should not be any room for ambiguity. How would you be able to lead your readers into buying your product if your message does not come across clearly to them? Although the length of the sentences and paragraphs is not really an issue, it is still best to keep your copy no longer than they really need to be in order to perform their main function, which is to make a sale.

Using anecdotes, controversies, colorful language, and powerful phrases and words are good ways to keep the attention of the readers to your simple sales letters. However, you should try to avoid trite, overused words and cliches. People get tired of hearing the same things over and over again. Also, it is imperative that your sales copy contains facts and not exaggerated claims. Nothing can make people more distrustful than claims or promises that you cannot really deliver. Using abstractions, jokes, and other indirect references can also be misleading and would not really contribute much to the results of a sales letter so better not use them.

Lastly, you need to remember that most people are not fond of reading three to five pages of sales letter. Long blocks of paragraphs are not inviting to the eyes, in fact they may even cause eyestrain. Besides, not everybody loves reading novels, so do not attempt to make your sales letter pass as a novelette. Instead of trying to put all the things that you want to say in one paragraph, you can just use several paragraphs with about four to five sentences each. To recap, simple sales letters are effective in converting readers to customers, so keep your sales letters simple, straightforward, and not more wordy than necessary.
